The funds were received by the Board of Trustees during their meeting on Tuesday, October 25.

SBUSD received $191,825 from the California Healthy Air and Plumbing Efficiency Program to upgrade plumbing at select sites. Approximately $83,000 of that is for the remodeling of the restrooms at Santa Barbara Junior High School. The funds will be used to replace low-flow and high-efficiency toilets, urinals, and faucets.

In addition, the district won two rounds of financing to improve heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems across numerous campuses.

One grant provided $418,737 to Cleveland Elementary School, Franklin Elementary School, Santa Barbara Junior High School, La Cumbre Junior High School, Santa Barbara Community Academy, Harding University Partnership School, and McKinley Elementary School to upgrade its HVAC systems.

The other $1,154,174 grant will help Santa Barbara High School, La Cuesta Continuation High School, Roosevelt Elementary School, Washington Elementary School, Monroe Elementary School, Adams Elementary School, La Colina Junior High School, Goleta Valley Junior High School, San Marcos High School, and Dos Pueblos High School update their HVAC systems.

The monies will be used to evaluate and repair current HVAC systems, as well as purchase new air filters and carbon dioxide sensors. Furthermore, the study will help efforts to obtain a new round of funding to replace aging HVAC units.

These are just a few of the several initiatives underway at Santa Barbara Unified. SBUSD revealed five new classrooms at Monroe Elementary earlier this year.

The district also begun its major solar panel project, which will affect every district school and is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year.
